Portland Ovations presents the Grammy award-winning Ying Quartet with special guest, cellist Zuill Bailey at Hannaford Hall at USM Portland for an afternoon concert on Saturday, May 7th at 3PM.

The Ying Quartet and cellist Zuill Bailey reunite in a special program that features an unforgettable adaptation of Schumann's most expressive cello concerto, as well as intimate performances of Billy Childs' Awakening and Beethovens' Sonata for String Quartet, Op. 29 "Kreutzer." David and Phillip Ying are co-artistic directors of Maine's Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in classical music, combining brilliantly communicative concerts with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music. Bailey is widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world. His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry and dynamic personality has secured his place as one of the most sought after cellists today.

On Friday, May 6th between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM at Corthell Hall at USM's School of Music in Gorham, the Ying Quartet will hold a Masterclass where the public is invited to watch as the artists provide technical and artistic instruction to USM's most accomplished music students producing an exceptional afternoon of musicianship at work.

Prior to the performance on May 7th a pre-performance lecture titled "Transcription and Crossover" will take place between 2PM - 2:45 PM at Hannaford Hall, USM Portland. Where Bowdoin College professor and musicologist Mary Hunter focuses on "Awakening" by Billy Childs, a composer best known for his jazz compositions, and explores the functions and values of transcriptions and the way they enrich and complicate the idea of "original" work of music.

Tickets for Ying Quartet and Zuill Bailey are $38 for Ovations' Members, $42 for the general public and a limited amount of $10 student tickets are also available. The Ying Quartet and Zuill Bailey performance is graciously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. This performance is sponsored by WBACH.
