Season subscribers have had first dibs, but on October 1 the general public can set off to see the wizard! Starting on that date, tickets to Penobscot Theatre Company's highly anticipated holiday show,
The Wizard of Oz, may be purchased online or by calling the box office at (207) 942-3333. The production will run December 4-28 with 19 evening and Sunday matinee performances and four special student matinees.
"I'm delighted to announce the talented young artists who will help bring this beloved tale to life," said Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport. "Bronwyn Beardsley of Ellsworth and Molly Hagerty of Bangor will share the iconic role of Dorothy. Each has the brain, the heart, and the courage required in professional theatre and they're ready to take center stage!" The two seventh-graders have appeared previously in supporting and ensemble roles with Penobscot Theatre Company. Beardsley was last seen as Rebecca in the 2014 production of Our Town and she and Hagerty were both in the cast of Cinderella: A New Telling of an Old Tale. Molly made her professional debut as an orphan in the 2012 production of Annie.
"Of course, one can't think of Dorothy without thinking of her little dog, Toto, too," said Newport. "Our canine call yielded many fine candidates, but leading the pack was Sophie, a 7.5-pound Yorkie, who would melt the heart of even the most wicked witch." Sophie shares her Bangor home with Cyndy Ingalls and Amy McCormack.
Joining Beardsley and Hagerty among the human leads will be Dominick Varney, Ben Layman, and Ira Kramer as the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tinman, respectively; Arthur Morison as Professor/the Wizard; Brianne Beck and Auntie Em/Glinda the Good Witch; Portland based, Pamela Chabora as Mrs. Gultch/the Wicked Witch; and Brad Labree as Uncle Henry/the Guard. Michele Colvin, who directed the theatre's hit season opener, The Honky Angels, will return to Bangor to direct and choreograph The Wizard of Oz. The theatre will announce the full cast and design team in the coming weeks.
The Wizard of Oz is produced in partnership with Dead River Company, Deighan Wealth Advisors,
Kindred Spirits Veterinary Clinic, Bangor International Airport, Granville Stone and Hearth, and Green Acres Kennel Shop. The theatre gratefully acknowledges the generous support provided throughout the season by the following sponsors: Canyon Networks, The Charles Inn, Bangor Daily News, The Maine Edge, Blueberry Broadcasting, Downtown with Rich Kimball, ZONE Radio, and WLBZ Channel 2.
