Threshold Stage Company Presents "The Clean House" By Sarah Ruhl, Directed by A. Nora Long at Star Theatre at the Kittery Community Center, April 13th - April 29th, 2017
The late John Lennon once said that "Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans". Threshold Stage Company's production of Sarah Ruhl's Pulitzer Prize nominated comedy, "The Clean House", featuring original music from and performed by world renowned fusion artist Randy Armstrong, at the Star Theatre in Kittery, ME, hilariously explores how we respond to the vicissitudes that life brings us when we are busy making other plans. Ruhl's play centers around the organized and seemingly perfectly planned life of Lane, a successful and highly regarded physician who has recently hired a Brazilian housekeeper, Matilda, that hates to clean and longs to be a comedian. As Lane attempts to organize and bring order to her home; a series of surreal and inexplicable events cause her world to spin out of her control. The result is a scintillating examination of how we choose to respond to what life brings us.
Bringing in director A. Nora Long from Boston's award winning Lyric Stage Company and international world fusion artist Randy Armstrong, Co-artistic directors Peter Motson and Heather Glenn Wixson continue to elevate the already high level of innovative and entertaining theatre that has become a hallmark of Threshold Stage Company. The collaborative relationship between Long and Armstrong creates a very powerful dynamic as Armstrong's original music beautifully accentuates the nuances of each character in "The Clean House"; giving even greater depth to Long's artistic vision. For Director A. Nora Long "the best comedy is rooted in the truth and honesty of the characters as they confront and respond to their life's challenges no matter how ridiculous the circumstances they find themselves in." "The Clean House" embodies this comedic truth as Lane, Charles, Virginia, Matilda and Ana's lives intersect in whimsically unexpected and surreal ways; compelling them to face the unforeseen and sometimes tragic occurrences that befall them. The cast of national, regional and local professional actors expertly inhabit the stunning dream-like minimalist set delivering laughter and provoking insights with their perfectly timed whimsical and witty dialogue; with Heather Glenn Wixson, Maria Mendes Hendricks, Nancy Oarneire Graham, Johanna Carlisle-Zepeda and Chris Curtis.
Threshold Stage Company's magical production of "The Clean House" will have you laughing out loud and reflecting upon the decisions we all must make when life lays the unexpected at our doorsteps.
