A unique artistic exchange between the cities of Portland and Bangor takes place SATURDAY, MAY 31 at 1:30 p.m., as Snowlion Rep's PLAYLAB presents a reading of the new play POWER PLAY by Laura Emack with proceeds from the event going to fund the Bangor Library Building Fund. The reading of POWER PLAY will be followed by an audience talkback. Bangor actor Irene Dennis, who coordinates the Library's monthly play-reading group, will lead the discussion.
Power Play enters little-mined dramatic territory in the high-stakes world of college sports. The action happens at a fictional college in Vermont, but University of Maine fans will relate to challenges facing the new men's hockey coach. The team's resurgence falters when Shane Reilly, star freshman goalie, gets into academic hot water. Both coach and player face crises in which integrity wages battle against the need to win.
Emack's work has been seen in New York City and at various Maine settings including the "Maine Playwrights Festival" and Penobscot Theatre's "Northern Writes" New Play Festival. In December 2012, Husson University Theatre (HUT) produced the world premiere of The Easter Parade. Emack looks forward to seeing three short plays (Backseat Driver, A Talking Scale and The Day the Music Died) performed by Midcoast Actors' Studio of Belfast, directed by Jason Bannister, in October 2014.
In addition to producing cutting-edge plays and musicals, Snowlion Rep of Portland operates PLAYLAB, a group of playwrights and actors that meets monthly to explore new scripts written by members. Artistic Director Al D'Andrea will direct the May 31 reading, which is the second "on book" presentation of Power Play after its PLAYLAB debut in January 2014 and subsequent revisions by the playwright. Snowlion Rep's trip to Bangor is funded by Bangor Savings Bank and Deighan Wealth Advisors.
The Saturday-afternoon performance begins at 1:30 P.M. on May 31 at the library, 145 Harlow Street, Bangor, Maine. Light refreshments will be served. Advance reservations are recommended, as seating is limited. Cost for the event is $5 per person. All proceeds are payable to the BPL Building Fund. To reserve space, call (207) 567-3437 or email LKECPA@prexar.com.
Don't miss this chance to enter the world of college sports, experience a unique artistic exchange, and help the library all in one afternoon!
