Snowlion Repertory Company is seeking musical theater performers for its June production of The Freaks Club to be performed June 13-23 at the Studio Theater at Portland Stage, 25A Forest Avenue, Portland. Paid positions. Experienced actors only. Will consider AEA.
The Freaks Club recounts the story of 18-year-old Anna - a girl suffering from a rare condition that makes her skin appear as fish scales - and her journey to a remote island community to receive experimental treatments for her disease. As the new kid at Fairbridge Island High, Anna continues to be bullied for her looks, and immediately bonds with the other "freaks" - blind, sassy Cookie, emotionally-damaged Jake, and sweet but hapless Skunk. But once Anna's "cure" is complete, she is stunned to find she is no longer a "fish" but a real "dish"! The popular kids sweep her away and Anna breaks with the club. Her dream-come-true soon turns into a nightmare, though, and Anna must discover her own self-worth and the value of friendship. At the edge of despair and near suicide, she ultimately finds her way back to her own true face and to the friends who, she realizes, she will always need.
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
ANNA 18 years old, afflicted with Stellar Syndrome, a rare form of ichthyosis, in which her skin is thick and rough like fish scales; outgoing and spunky, passionate and witty, her affliction has made her plucky, courageous, and instantly loveable, but she is in denial of the deep pain she really feels at being so different (mezzo B3-F#5)
COOKIE 17 years old, her real name is Cassandra Cook; legally blind although she can see light and shadows; highly intelligent and self-sufficient with a sardonic wit, her tough exterior masks an ultra-sensitive soul (mezzo A3-D5)
JAKE 19 years old, his real name is John Jacobson; he is afflicted with an aversion to human touch since witnessing his father's death by drowning at the age of 12; though he often goes off to be alone when having emotional difficulties, he can be sweet, outgoing and funny (baritenor B3-F5)
SKUNK 16 years old, Jake's brother; his real name is Steven Jacobson; he has dark hair with a white spot or streak where he suffered a head injury on the night of his father's death, giving him his nickname; sweet but hapless (baritenor C4-E5)
LINDA 17 years old, the most popular girl in school; also the most beautiful, and she knows it; she is accustomed to getting everything she wants; she and Cookie share a bitter rivalry in high school, although they were best friends at a younger age; a crafty, manipulating Queen Bee (mezzo Bb3-Eb5)
ANTHONY 18 years old, the most popular boy in school and, naturally, the best looking; easy-going but self-absorbed, he believes looks count for everything. He wears a glove on one hand that masks a secret deformity (baritenor D4-G5)
DAVID 40s, Anna's father, a widower since Anna's mother died in childbirth; devoted father, over-protective, unable to refuse his daughter anything; comic & loveable (baritone G3-D5)
LILY 30s, Dr Lily Engstrom is the director of the Foundation for Advanced Genetics; she is entirely devoted to her work, which is primarily research, but finds she cannot resist the opportunity to secretly 'test' her theories on the willing Anna (mezzo C4-F#5)
