Portland Ovations, the area's leading non-profit performing arts presenter, kicks off their 2018-19 season with a benefit event that highlights what they do best: producing top-notch, one-of-a-kind arts experiences in the heart of Portland. On October 3rd, the organization will create a New York City cabaret experience at Aura, the newly renovated, highly acclaimed venue located at 121 Center Street in Downtown Portland. Many fundraising events feature celebrity appearances. Ovations, however, puts the celebrity at the center of theirs. The evening will feature a performance by the Grammy Award winning, cabaret sensation Lady Rizo, who has performed with Moby and Yo-Yo Ma and been compared to Freddie Mercury and Donna Summer.
Fresh off a celebrated stint at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this powerhouse performer will make her Maine debut to help Portland Ovations raise funds to support their artistic and educational outreach endeavors, which includes their Ovations Offstage programming. For those unfamiliar with Ovations Offstage, known as O2 for short, the program is committed to integrating the performing arts into everyday life, through school time performances, artist workshops and master classes, community discussions and pre-performance lectures, and more.
Ovations' Executive Director, Aime?e Petrin said this about the event, "We wanted build a fundraiser around one of the things we do best: introducing incredible and unexpected artists to Maine audiences. Lady Rizo is a legend of the downtown cabaret scene in New York and she's collaborated with Ovations' favorites like Pilobolus and Yo-Yo Ma. And as a fervent supporter of arts education, she understands the value of Ovations' mission and programming. Plus, she's outrageous - her voice AND her comedy. We can't wait to share her with Portland."
The whole thing kicks off at 6pm with hors d'oeuvres and cash bar. Lady Rizo takes the stage at 7pm. Exclusive packages, including tickets to Bruce Springsteen's sold-out run of "Springsteen on Broadway," will be auctioned off by celebrated auctioneer, Elizabeth Ross Holmstrom.Tickets start at $100 with VIP packages, available for $150. VIPs receive preferred seating, access to AURA's VIP lounge,
and an exclusive, post show meet and greet, and champagne toast with Lady Rizo herself.
Portland Ovations has been a staple of Maine's arts economy for nearly 90 years. Proceeds from this incredible event will help the organization to continue to contribute to the area's vibrant arts scene through public events, foster local artists through workshops and learning opportunities with performing artists from around the globe and provide Maine students with opportunities to grow and learn for years to come.
