Penobscot Theatre Company proudly presents the spine-chilling ghost play, The Woman In Black from October 17 - November 3, perfectly set in the historic Bangor Opera House.
In October, who doesn't love a good, old-fashioned ghost story? Especially a ghost story told on the stage of a 125 year old opera house?
Set on a lonely English moor, on an isolated causeway, Arthur Kipps, is an up-and-coming young lawyer who has come north to attend the funeral and settle the estate of a Mrs. Alice Drablow who lives alone at Eel Marsh House. The routine formalities Kipps anticipates give way to a tumble of events and secrets more sinister and terrifying than any nightmare: the rocking chair in the nursery of the deserted Eel Marsh House, the eerie sound of pony and trap, a child's scream in the fog, and, most dreadfully, and for Kipps most tragically, the woman in black.
This brilliant adaptation, by Stephen Mallatratt is based on Susan Hill's classic chiller. It has had three film adaptations, most recently in 2012, starring Daniel Radcliff. Unanimously acclaimed by the critics and now in its 25th year in London's West End, The Woman In Black is a terrifying trip through time into a tragic and ghostly world where the horrors of the supernatural combine with the power and intensity of Live Theatre to send shock waves through the audience with splendid thrills and chills.
Directed by Artistic Director, Bari Newport the production features Brad LaBree, who was last seen at PTC in Around the World in 80 Days and San Francisco based Mark Chambers* who is making his Penobscot Theatre Company debut. Set design is by Sean McClelland (The Sugar Bean Sisters), lighting design by Jonathan Spencer (Boeing-Boeing), sound by Brandie Rita (The Fox on the Fairway), properties by longtime PTC artist, Meredith Perry and costumes by Kevin Koski (Wit).
"The Woman In Black is a brilliant exercise in atmosphere and controlled horror," says Newport. "It's the most perfectly delicious spine-tingler and really suits the Opera House well."
