Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT) will showcase the music of Irving Berlin with two performances of I Love a Piano on Monday, June 18 at 2:00 and 7:30 PM.
I Love a Piano follows the journey of a piano as it moves in and out of American lives from the turn of the century to the present. Along the way, the story comes to vibrant life with over sixty of Irving Berlin's most beloved songs, including classics such as "Blue Skies," "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Cheek to Cheek," "Always," "How Deep is the Ocean," "Anything You Can Do," "God Bless America," and, of course, "I Love a Piano."
Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, rousing and reflective, I Love a Piano is a fitting tribute to the man Jerome Kern famously said had "no place in American music-he IS American music."
The cast includes MSMT performance interns Elisabeth Christie, Caleb James Grochalski, Jake Hartman, Stevie Ann Mack, Lauren McDonald, Michael Olaribigbe, Melaina Corey Rairamo and Alec Duffy Talbott. Local actors Siobhan Kelley(Gorham, ME), Miles Obrey(Gorham, ME) and Andrew Carney(Millinocket) round out the cast.
The show is directed and choreographed by Curt Dale Clar and Raymond Marc Dumont(Portland, ME). Music is directed by Ben McNaboe (originally from Yarmouth, ME). Costume design is by Travis M. Grant(Lisbon Falls, ME), lighting design is by Annalise Caudle, sound design by Rachel Boissevain and props design by Corinne Gologursky. Stage manager for the show is Mickey Acton.
