Aqua City Actors Theatre announces that Maine playwright Carolyn Gage's "The Poorly-Written Play Festival" will be featured in No Reservations, a program of one-acts to be presented on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m.
The author of seventy-five plays, musicals and one-woman shows, Gage specializes in non-traditional roles for women. In "The Poorly-Written Play Festival," every rule of good writing is broken as members of a theatre play selection committee wrangle over a terrible selection of scripts.
Director Joe Klapatch states, "It's always exciting to perform a local playwright's work, especially a piece by Carolyn Gage, whom I've admired for quite some time."
Gage, who plans on attending the Sunday, May 7 performance, adds, "The play was inspired by an article I read about Boston's Museum of Bad Art... yes, that really exists and it's hilarious. Anyway, the article got me wondering if it would be possible to write a play that was so appallingly bad, audiences would not be able to stop laughing. Turns out it was a big hit at New York's International CringeFest, and now I can't wait to see what ACAT does with it!"
Along with "The Poorly-Written Play Festival," the program includes: "Lives of the Great Waitresses" by Nina Shengold, and "Lip Service" by Bradley Hayward, both directed by Stephanie Irwin; "The Philadelphia" by David Ives, directed by Juli Brooks and Keith Libold; "The Battle Of Bull Run Always Makes Me Cry" by Carole Real, and "Sure Thing" by David Ives, both directed by Doree Austin.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors (general admission) and can be purchased at the door, but space is limited. Please reserve in advance by emailing reservations@acattheatre.org.
