A free workshop for performing artists who are interested in touring their work across the country will be held on Wednesday April 4 from 3:30-5:30 pm at SPACE Gallery, 538 Congress St. Portland. Co-hosted by Bates Dance Festival, Portland Ovations and SPACE Gallery, this dynamic and informative workshop is designed and presented by the National Performance Network (NPN), as part of its regional programming.

"Doing it on the Road: a Beginners' Guide for Touring Performing Artists" is a free information-packed workshop, designed and presented by the NPN. "Doing it" demystifies the touring process for artists who are interested in learning how to tour their work, regionally and beyond. "This free workshop for performing artists offers valuable tools for getting your act on the road!" states Laura Faure, Director Bates Dance Festival and an NPN Partner.

NPN devotes a large part of its programming in support of touring artists. After more than 25 years as a national nonprofit arts organization, NPN is very familiar with what it takes for artists to tour their work. NPN has 59 "Partner" presenters in 41 cities across the U.S., and represents diverse cultural organizers, including artists, working to create meaningful partnerships and to provide leadership that enables the practice and public experience of the performing arts in the United States. www.npnweb.org

Bates Dance Festival brings together an international community of choreographers, performers, educators and students in a cooperative community to study, perform and create new work. The Festival offers a supportive atmosphere aimed at fostering a creative exchange of ideas, encouraging exploration of new ground and providing opportunities to experience a wide spectrum of dance/movement disciplines. Artists, students and audiences share their knowledge and inspiration through workshops, jams, discussions, informal showings and performances. www.batesdancefestival.org

Portland Ovations is a non-profit presenter of live art. Each year since 1931, Portland Ovations has brought a dynamic season of exceptional performing artists to Portland, Maine, including classical music, jazz, opera, dance, theater, and Broadway. In addition to our live performances, we bring the exhilaration of the performing arts out into our community through Ovations Offstage, creating those resonating moments when artists and audiences connect. www.portlandovations.org.

Space Gallery is a nonprofit contemporary art space featuring visual arts, live music and performance, film, artists lectures and more. www.space538.org.

Attending artists will receive a syllabus of touring tips and tools at the 2-hour session. Email nick@space538.org for more information or to RSVP by April 1.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
