Hackmatack Playhouse Producer, and owner of the Guptill family homestead in Berwick, Michael Guptill, is always up for a new idea. The barn theatre, Hackmatack Playhouse on Route 9 in Berwick, is home of 42 summers of live theater, a Bison farm, children's theatre camp, a venue for fundraising opportunities, a venue for concerts, comedy, and weddings. So when friend of the family, Arricka Nowland asked if plays could be interpreted for the deaf, Guptill didn't hesitate, "Yes!"
Arricka Nowland and Jill Andrews will be interpreting the Saturday, July 13, 8:00 PM presentation of "The Sound of Music," and special seating has been put aside for the deaf and hearing impaired community.
Arricka Nowland has enjoyed many of the shows at Hackmatack, and was pleased that Guptill jumped at the opportunity. Hackmatack's first interpretated show was "Hairspray" last summer. Nowland is a National Interpreter Certification NIC Master. Individuals who achieve the NIC Master level have passed the NIC Knowledge exam and scored within the high range of a professional interpreter on both the interview and performance portions of the test.
Jill Andrews interpreted her first play as a volunteer at age 15. Almost three decades later, she still finds theatrical interpreting an excitement unmatched in other settings.
