City Theater Presents ENCHANTED APRIL, A Romantic Comedy By Matthew Barber Image

"For those who appreciate Wisteria and Sunshine" If that sounds like you, join City Theater in Biddeford April 4 -20th as they present Enchanted April, the romantic comedy by Mathew Barber. It is the story of 4 very ordinary women who find themselves bewitched and restored by a magical month among "The wisteria and sunshine". See why critics have called it, "a comical, restorative journey of discovery that leaves the audience positively glowing."

Enchanted April begins on a rainy February day when Lotty, dissatisfied with her bleak life, convinces her new friend, Rose, to join her on a holiday in a rented Italian villa. To share costs, the two recruit the stoic Mrs. Graves, whose name is an apt representation of her character, and the flamboyant actress and socialite, Lady Caroline Bramble. In the company of wisteria blossoms, the Mediterranean sunshine, and a cheeky maid, who only speaks Italian, this unlikely quartet rediscover themselves in ways that they - and we - could never have expected.

Enchanted April is based on the 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. It was adapted for the stage by Matthew Barber. The play earned both the John Gassner Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New American Play in 2003 and was a Tony Award nominee in 2003 for Best Play.

City Theater's Artistic Director, Linda Sturdivant, has assembled a truly gifted cast of local talent, including: Gusta Johnson (Old Orchard Beach) as Lotty Wilton; Rebecca Cole (Windham) playing Rose Arnott; Stephanie Maloney (Cumberland) in the role of Lady Caroline Bramble; and Doni Tamblyn (Portland) rounding out our quartet as Mrs. Graves. The four women are joined by Caleb Lacy (Westbrook) in the role of Lotty's husband, Mellersh Wilton; Charlie Cole (Windham) playing Frederick Arnott; Benjamin Keller (Scarborough) as Anthony Wilding; and Jennine Cannizzo (Gorham) as the Italian speaking maid, Costanza.

Tickets to see Enchanted April are a perfect Mother's Day gift. We will be honoring the mothers in our audience at our Mother's Day matinee on May 13 with a special gift and a drawing for a gift basket, which will include dinner for 2 at a local restaurant and 2 tickets to see The Producers. Reserve your tickets now.

Enchanted April runs May 4- 20. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, Sundays May 13 & 20 at 2:00 PM. (There is no performance on Sunday, May 6.) Tickets are $20 and can purchased at the Box Office by calling (207) 282-0849, online at www.citytheater.org, or through the Heart of Biddeford.
