Cast Aside Productions, Portland's professional musical theater company, is partnering with Blue Elephant Events and Catering to present the Tony award-winning "Titanic the Musical" at the Portland Masonic Temple, November 5-13, 2016. Performances: Saturdays at 6PM and Sundays at Noon.
This unique dinner theater event will bring guests back in time to experience the fateful journey of "the unsinkable ship."
"There are some haunting and beautiful similarities between Titanic and the [Portland Masonic] Temple that make it the perfect location," said Cast Aside Productions Artistic Director David Surkin. "They were constructed at the same time, with the same meticulous care and attention to detail. When attendees dine in the Armory it won't take much to suspend disbelief and picture themselves in the 1st class dining room aboard the luxury liner."
The evening begins with a four-course menu inspired by the menus on Titanic and created by Blue Elephant Events and Catering, the premier Maine event planning company and resident of the Temple.
After dinner Cast Aside Productions will present the 1997 Tony Award winner for best musical, elegantly composed by Maury Yeston and featuring a book by Peter Stone, who is well known for writing the book for the oft-produced musical "1776."
Cast Aside's Executive Director Celeste Green explains: "The room allows us to provide a 360-degree immersive experience for theater-goers. Titanic is so large, there is great difficulty in capturing its scope in a traditional theater setting. Using the entire room will allow us to create a sense of size, while still allowing for the intimacy of seeing an actor perform next to your table."
This production marks the second collaboration between Cast Aside Productions, Blue Elephant and The Portland Masonic Temple after presenting "Sunday in the Park with George" in the Corinthian Hall last spring.
"It is an honor to return to the Portland Masonic Temple," Surkin added. "There is a very real, palpable energy within the walls of that building. Everyone that steps through the doors can feel it immediately. We do not take that energy for granted, it helps elevate our art and I'm excited to share it with all that attend Titanic the Musical."
