When the now embattled Wells Fargo recently ran a series of ads suggesting that young people grow up and "out of careers in the arts" and into "mature choices of professions like the sciences and business," the implications of the spots seriously irritated and alarmed most of us in the theatre community. A dancer yesterday, an engineer today....what message is that sending to our young people, many of whom are already deprived of arts education in their schools? It was then that the idea occurred to me and our Broadway World editors that a series of short video profiles asking successful theatre people why they had chosen a life in performance and what the rewards have been for them might be just the antidote.

So here in Maine, I have undertaken to create such a series of mini profiles of artists working here in our very rich - albeit remote - cultural landscape. The plan is to create about a dozen such 3-5 minute pieces, easily viewed and shared, which will serve not only to give coverage to the many wonderful arts organizations and artists here in the state, but also to acquaint viewers everywhere about the flourishing theatre scene in Maine.

Here is the first installment: a profile of a well-known and highly respected figure here in Maine and on the national scene: actor, director, author and Artistic Director of Maine State Music Theatre, Curt Dale Clark. Others already lined up are Artistic Director of the Good Theater, director/producer Brian P. Allen, and choreographer, director, actor Raymond Marc Dumont. Then as summer approaches and more and more artists flock to Maine and I have the opportunity to interview them, we will continue to create more spots for your enjoyment.
