The "tale as old as time" of "Beauty and the Beast" is one that has delighted young and old for generations including patrons of The Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor. This family-friendly musical runs from December 7th - 30th. Directed by Ethan Paulini, this presentation of Disney's classic doesn't disappoint. The show was such a hit that two additional performances were added for both December 27th and 30th.
"This holiday season," said Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport, "gather your loved ones and be our guest, be our guest, put our magic to the test! In keeping with our holiday tradition, this show has all the whistles and one spectacular Belle. With gorgeous scenery, lush costumes and extraordinary talent on stage and in the pit, it will sweep you away!"
The set, designed by Moriah and Isabel Curley-Clay, brought the Beast's castle to life while blending into the scenery of the theatre's recently renovated auditorium. The props, as in the original story, truly do come to life. Penobscot Theatre regulars Ben Layman and Dominick Varney's camaraderie are truly fitting for their roles as Cogsworth and Lumiere, respectively. Meanwhile, Annie Leonardi-Merchant and Cuthbert Steadman form an endearing mother-son bond as Mrs. Potts and Chip.
All of the actors transition seamlessly from being props to being human again. Aiding this transition was Belle (Jazmin Gorsline) charming the Beast (Cory Osborne) out of his brutish ways into falling in love with her. Adding to the romance was the musical stylings of the ensemble including many local musicians. Even Gaston (Ira Kramer) and LeFou (Jennifer Shepard) themselves couldn't come between this beauty and beast.
With a mix of heartwarming romance and a few good laughs, "Beauty and the Beast" truly has something for everyone. I would recommend this show for any family looking for an enjoyable holiday outing.
