Mad Horse Theatre Company's 32nd season lineup boasts three critically acclaimed plays and an award-winning musical!
"We're thrilled with this upcoming season," says Artistic Director Christine Louise Marshall. "It represents a broad range of subject matter, from a wildly provocative musical to a delicately wrought examination of class, to the careful negotiation of relationships in this modern world, to a hilarious skewering of the patriarchy. Mad Horse always seeks to examine what makes us all uniquely and collectively human. With these four terrific and diverse plays, we hope to do so. We're terrifically excited to share them with our audiences!"
The season opens with the riotous rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, September 21 through October 15, 2017.
With music and lyrics by Michael Friedman and book by Alex Timbers, this satirical, comedic mash-up of American history follows Andrew Jackson from his childhood on the wild frontier to his controversial reign in the White House. With the country divided into rich and poor, and continued skirmishes with Native Americans upsetting the New World, Jackson begins his steady climb from military strategist to populist rabble-rouser to President of the United States-and rocks like no political figure has ever rocked before.
Winner of the Outer Critics Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.
One Flea Spare, by Naomi Wallace, runs January 18 through February 4, 2018.
Set in plague-ravaged 17th Century London, a wealthy couple is preparing to flee their quarantined home when a mysterious sailor and a young girl are discovered sneaking into their boarded-up house. Now, they find themselves trapped together for 28 days - and the only thing these strangers fear more than the Plague...is each other.
1997 Obie Award winner for Best Play; 1996 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, Joseph Kesselring Prize, and Fellowship of Southern Writers Drama Award.
The third production of the season, Reasons To Be Pretty, by Neil LaBute, runs March 15 through April 1, 2018.
A man's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his offhand remarks about a female coworker's pretty face and his own girlfriend's lack thereof get back to his girlfriend. When his best buddy (and his buddy's wife) also enter the picture, the emotional equation becomes exponentially more complicated. LaBute's razor-sharp dialogue lends poignancy and humor to the chaos of confronting deeply uncomfortable truths in an attempt to answer that oh-so-American question: How much is pretty worth?
2009 Tony and Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Play.
Closing out the season is Nell Benjamin's ridiculously hysterical farce, The Explorer's Club, May 3 through May 20, 2018.
London, 1879. The prestigious Explorers Club is in crisis: their bartender is terrible. Possibly worse - their acting president wants to admit a WOMAN! True, the lady in question is brilliant, beautiful, and has discovered a legendary Lost City... but admitting her into this enclave could shake the very foundation of the British Empire! And how does one make such deep decisions without a decent drink? Grab your pith helmet & flask, prepare your secret handshake, and enter the hilarious world of THE EXPLORER'S CLUB.
