Dance Masterwork restaging: Charles Weidman’s ‘Lynchtown’ (1936)
November 13-15, 2015 Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State St Madison, WI 53703 Fri: 7:30pm Sat: 5pm Sat: 8pm Sun: 2:30pm
Hope, despair, joy, rage, beauty… the Ying Yang of the spirit… Juxtaposed. Headlined by a 1936 masterwork by choreographer Charles Weidman’s uniquely American style of movement, our fall show contrasts bitter and sweet. Weidman was Martha Graham’s dance partner in Denishawn Company before both created their own world famous Companies. In “Lynchtown,” Weidman explores the escalating action of crowds, individuals spiraling into unthinking mob violence. Also on the playbill are sweet excerpts of “Promise,” (inspired by Steinbecks ‘East of Eden’), a work by Winifred Haun, danced by her Chicago-based company. And the bitter: “This is Not America,” a Robert E. Cleary original. Then, Lisa Thurrell’s lyrical “Come Months, Come Away” inspired by poets Bronte, Keats, and Shelley; completes an evening of contrasts, an emotional roller coaster ride. Hang on tight.
