Local theatre company, Music Theatre of Madison, is presenting the Wisconsin premiere of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson July 19-27th. The show, written by Michael Friedman and Alex Timbers is unconventional and politically incorrect, but is a very different and surprisingly heartfelt look at the life of Andrew Jackson and the 19th century. The show, like the man himself, is slightly complicated and discombobulated, with a number of funny and sweet moments.
This Wisconsin premiere is directed by Meghan Randolph, with music direction by Patrick Christians and choreography by Jayme Shimooka.
Director Meghan Randolph, who also acts as MTM Executive director said, "What really sold me on BBAJ was the libretto. Typically I will listen to a show and the music will make the call, and I only dismiss it if the book has considerable problems that I can't overcome. But that wasn't the case here. It intrigued me just enough to get a perusal copy of the script. And then after I read that I decided we absolutely had to do this show." She continues to describe the show as "utterly brilliant, completely unique, and really insightful."
This is an incredibly unique musical with the material to appeal to a large variety of age groups, personalities, and individuals, and is enjoyable for those who frequent musicals and those who aren't as theatrically involved. A truly remarkable show, it crosses a wide variety of topics in only 90 minutes, and is unlike any other show in the Madison area playing this summer. With show stopping rock numbers such as "Populism, Yea Yea" to get audiences ready to rock out, this show will certainly show Madison audiences that musicals aren't all sunshine and tap dancing.
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson is playing at the Bartell Theater July 19, 20, 25, 26, and 27 at 7:30 p.m. each night. Tickets cost only one Jackson ($20!) and are available online at www.mtmadison.com or by phone at 1-800-838-3006.
