First performed at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice in 1857, Simon Boccanegra is an opera with a prologue and three acts. It is Verdi’s most compelling portrayal of a man who is both a leader and an outsider, set against one of the most incisive depictions of politics ever put on the stage.
Although Boccanegra remains just outside the core repertory of Verdi favorites, it is a rewarding example of his genius at its most humane and insightful.
It is the first time that Gustavo Gimeno, the new musical director of the OPL, conducts his orchestra in the pit of the Grand Théâtre.
