A dazzling dance spectacular direct from CubaWith 14 dancers & 9 musicians[EN] Originally the dream of Cuban choreographer Nilda Guerra, Havana Rakatan is one of Sadler's Well's most successful productions. The show combines salsa, mambo, jazz, bolero, son, cha-cha-cha and rumba to recount the story of some 500 years of dancing in the Caribbean island.The impressive array of dance styles begins with ancient African rituals that eventually give way to modern forms such as the mambo, which caused scandal in the 1940's, and the cha-cha-cha that came to define the glamour and elegance of Cuban woman in the 1950s. This all culminates in the salsa - the spectacularly contagious mixture of all these forms.Music is supplied by singer Geydi Chapman, who was discovered at the age of 14 when she became an impromptu understudy at the Teatro America in Havana. She is supported by the eight-piece son band Turquino, formed in the early 1980s by a group of students who were committed to traditional Cuban music.
