DESHSolo[EN] For many years, Akram Khan has been a regular visitor to Luxembourg with both intimate duets and more ambitious works with his touring company. His last visit with bahok in 2010 and Confluence in 2012, further established him as one of the most popular choreographers at the Grand Théâtre. After critically acclaimed collaborations with artists including Sylvie Guillem, Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley, Desh is set to be one of Khan's most personal works, as he seeks to reconnect with his cultural roots.Reflecting on life in Bangladesh, Khan portrays several characters familiar in daily Bangladeshi culture through his own body and voice. For this solo performance, he has teamed up with Oscar-winning Chinese visual artist Tim Yip, fellow Sadler's Wells Associate Artist and lighting designer Michael Hulls, writer and poet Karthika Nair, Olivier Award-winning composer Jocelyn Pook and slam poet PolarBear.» Desh is as transporting a piece of dance as I have ever seen. The first full-length solo contemporary work by Akram Khan is also his best show yet: poignant, thrilling, magical, moving and, throughout its perfectly judged 80 minutes, utterly transfixing. The Telegraph» The ever-present tensions between history and identity, the collective past and the personal present; the paradoxical state of being that is the condition of the second-generation immigrant. [...] And Desh , his first full-length solo work, is undoubtedly among the best pieces that Mr Khan has created. The New York Times» The most urgent, beautiful and confident work of his career.
