Artistic Director Tony Prince and Producing Director Richard McGrew are delighted to announce the opening of Sarah Ruhl's "Melancholy Play: A Contemporary Farce," the second and final production of the The Liminal Playhouse's inaugural season.

"Melancholy Play" will run March 24 through April 3, 2016 at The Henry Clay Theatre, 604 South Third Street, Louisville, KY.

Director Tad Chitwood says, "'Melancholy Play' is a hilarious and heart-felt comedy about our longing for love and our love of longing. Tilly's quiet sense of joyful introspection is so magical that Frank, Joan, Frances, and Lorenzo fall immediately, and hopelessly, in love with her. Julian lets his cello do the talking. But while love triangles are hard enough, love pentagons can get really weird. 'Melancholy Play' is a sexy and mysterious romantic fantasy which follows these lovers on a hysterical journey. Join us for a riotous and thoughtful evening of theatre."

Ruhl originally wrote "Melancholy Play" to be scored for solo cello. She later adapted it into a chamber musical. The Liminal Playhouse is producing the original cello-only version. McGrew has composed an original musical score.

The cast is Neil Brewer, Mera Kathryn Corlett, Tony Prince, Laura Ellis, Teresa Willis and Richard McGrew. The entire technical team from "Christmas on Mars," The Liminal Playhouse's premiere last fall, has returned for "Melancholy Play," including set designer Eric Allgeier, lighting designer Keith Kimmel and costumer Shane Estes.

The production is the third show to open in what has become a Sarah Ruhl trifecta that started with Looking for Lilith's "Orlando" and continues with ATL's world premiere of "For Peter Pan on her 70th birthday" as part of the Humana Festival of New American plays.

Prince says, "We are very excited to be a part of providing Louisville audiences with the unique opportunity to see three very different plays by one of America's most exciting current playwrights."

Tickets are $18 in advance or $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available at TheLiminalPlayhouse.org or by calling (502) 553-8056.

The Liminal Playhouse embraces, explores, and celebrates the ambiguous, and sometimes paradoxical, nature of our shared humanity.

The Liminal Playhouse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
