Artistic Director Tony Prince and Producing Director Richard McGrew are excited to announce the 2018-2019 season of The Liminal Playhouse, consisting of four Louisville premieres.
The season will open with "Mr. Universe" by Jim Grimsley. This outlandish, comic, suspenseful, shocking and strangely moving play from 1987 has been unjustly neglected and rarely produced. It will run from August 30 through September 9.
The second show will be "The Effect" by Lucy Prebble. While we may understand that our emotions are connected to chemical responses in our bodies, is that really all they are? As pharmaceutical companies continue to develop more and more mood (and emotion) altering drugs, how will we be able to determine whether our feelings for someone are "real"? This British play is a timely exploration of how little we really know about love. It will run October 25 through November 4.
The third production will be "Smart People" by Lydia R. Diamond. This 2014 play spans the time between 2007 and 2009. It's a romantic comedy about four "smart people" of various races trying to deal with racism, friendship and romance in the years leading up to the first Obama election.
The season will close with Edward Albee's "The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?" Although the play won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Play, the 2002 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and was a finalist for the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it has never been produced in Louisville. The Liminal Playhouse will be rectifying that situation with the close of our fourth season. The New York Times aptly described this play as exploring "...the irrational, confounding, and convention-thwarting nature of love."
Prince says, "We are extremely excited that these four Louisville premieres comprise The Liminal Playhouse's fourth season. This season runs the emotional gambit and will also give audiences plenty to think about."
All performances will be at The Henry Clay Theatre, 604 South Third Street, Louisville, KY.
Remaining performance for The Liminal Playhouses's current season are Laura Eason's "Sex with Strangers" opening Thursday, March 29, and running through April 8 and Philip Ridley's "The Fastest Clock in the Universe" running May 24 through June 3, both at The Henry Clay Theatre.
The Liminal Playhouse embraces, explores and celebrates the ambiguous, and sometimes paradoxical, nature of our shared humanity.
