An international collection of writers, from the U.S.A., United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand, have conjured eight new short works for the stage in a show called The Road-Trip Monologues. As the title implies, travel is a component of each piece, and each is played by a single performer.
Crossing the Bridge. By James Balian (Australia). A man desperately races against time to save his son’s life.
The Weary. By Michael G. Hilton (Germany). A wager involving a driving challenge and a classic white Lincoln creates an indelible memory for a man traveling with his brother and father.
Roller Coaster. By Lesley Asistio (USA). A Filipina-American girl’s father takes the family on a road trip in an attempt to distract her mother from her romance with another woman.
New Girl. By Roger Vickery (Australia). A Holocaust survivor tells of her postwar migration to Australia, to give her grandson’s prospective bride hope.
Hope for Us All. By Doc Andersen-Bloomfield (U.K.) A Black woman on a business trip finds herself in Charlottesville on its historic day of turmoil.
Boot’s Vacation. By Rex McGregor (New Zealand). Boot, a skateboarder, visits cities in several countries until he finds his personal paradise in New York.
Medea’s Medea. By Chas Belov (USA). The Medea of legend has traveled across the seas and survived thousands of years, to now find herself confined because of one of her violent acts.
Hypocrites and Strippers. By Kim Yaged (USA). Jyl, a lesbian who has broken up with a stripper, drives across the country only to meet….another stripper.
The Road-Trip Monologues are performed by the actors of the Raw Bites ’18 ensemble, comprised of Schafer Bourne, Emma Chelsey, Kenlyn Kanouse, Henry Kemp, Juliet Ladines, Nina Sallinen, Laura Walker and Sonya Wallace.
Jane Edwina Seymour directs The Road-Trip Momologues.
Ages: 16 to adult.
