LOS ANGELES (September 1, 2024) – Promenade Playhouse is pleased to present a world premiere drama, The (Mostly) True Story of a Common Scold by award-winning playwright Mike Teverbaugh. Natalia Lazarus will direct the cast of six that includes Dendrie Taylor (Sons of Anarchy and Pam & Tommy) and Tom Waters (Schooled and Remains of a Nation). This will be the first production in the new Promenade Playhouse location.  Opening September 20 – October 27, 2024

In the 1830’s era, Anne Royall, America’s first female journalist, alarmed by speeches from evangelical leaders declaring their intent to reshape America into a Christian nation, starts printing a newspaper from her Washington, D.C., kitchen to sound the alarm. She nearly pays with her life.

ABOUT THE SHOW

At the dawn of the Jackson administration, Anne Royall, America’s first female journalist, wages a personal war in print against evangelicals who she felt were trying to subvert the U.S. Constitution and turn America into a Christian nation. They toppled her stagecoach, harassed her at her Washington, D.C. home as she convalesced and ultimately, in a bid to silence her, had her arrested. Anne remained steadfast, surviving the ordeal with her life – and her resolve to defend what she loved about the new nation – intact.
