Musical Theatre Guild Announces 2022 -- 2023 Season
With new performance venues under consideration for the future, Musical Theatre Guild is thrilled to announce the final two shows in its two-decade-long residency at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. The company will be returning to Monday evening performances with in-concert productions of Lerner & Loewe’s BRIGADOON on Monday, November 14, and GREY GARDENS on Monday, February 27, 2023.
BRIGADOON is the enchanting and beloved Broadway and West End musical that inspired the classic MGM film, and numerous productions around the world. The glorious Lerner & Loewe score features such standards as “Almost Like Being in Love,” “Come To Me, Bend To Me,” and “Heather On the Hill.” It also served as a major inspiration for Emmy Award-winning Apple+ musical spoof, Schmigadoon.
When Musical Theatre Guild was founded 25 years ago, BRIGADOON was a staple of regional theatre. Now the show is a rarity which makes it perfect for the MTG touch. The company’s roster of Southern California’s finest musical theatre performers will ably handle the mix of whimsy, lush romanticism, and saucy comedy.
Musical Theatre Guild’s final production for the 2022 -2023 Season is GREY GARDENS, a musical as unique as the two women at its center. Inspired by the Maysles Brothers’ documentary, the show tells the story of “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” Bouvier, once polished members of high society, now living in squalor on the grounds of their crumbling mansion, Grey Gardens.
Not content to simply musicalize the film, Pulitzer prize-winning librettist Doug Wright creates a speculative backstory set in the family’s heyday of wealth and privilege. A choice that offers the ladies a humanity the camera lens does not.
Composer Scott Frankel and Lyricist Michael Korie create melodic songs in 1940’s style to showcase the Bouvier Family, including a young Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, at the pinnacle of their success. The songs in the second half are character-driven and move smoothly from the bizarre to the sublime.
The roles in GREY GARDENS are challenging both dramatically and musically. Christine Ebersole won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in the original production, which garnered a total of ten nominations. Musical Theatre Guild will rise to that challenge with a cast that can bring this unique show to vivid life.
Both performances will be at the Alex Theatre, 216 North Brand Boulevard, Glendale, CA. Two-show season subscription tickets are currently on sale for $88 per person (plus $4.00 facility fee per ticket/per show) for Orchestra seating and $82 per person (plus $4.00 facility fee per ticket/per show) for Terrace seating. Both subscriptions reflect a $5.00 per ticket discount for preferred seating prior to public sale.
To purchase a new subscription (or renew your existing subscription), please call or email the Alex Theatre box office at 818-660-5340 or tickets@sas.la and leave a message for a call back -- usually within 24-48 hours. Please renew by October 3 to secure your discounted tickets and preferred seats free of many standard service charges.
Remember, your season subscription helps MTG to continue producing the rarely-seen Broadway works you love to see year after year.
Musical Theatre Guild is 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership company of theatre professionals, devoted to preserving the unique American art form of musical theatre by presenting seldom-seen musicals in a staged reading concert format.
