In Krapp's Last Tape, pulitzer Prize winner Samuel Beckett created a haunting tale of a man searching for meaning in his life, a theme that permeates both of his masterpieces; Waiting for Godot and Endgame . Beckett's brilliantly and beautifully explores the relation of present-self to former-self, the effect of old memories on the present moment, and the weight of regret on the human sould. Krapp's Last Tape is a haunting and beautiful play: funny, sad, poignant.
The Story of Krapp's Last Tape is simple, sad, lovely, and ineffable: An old, lonely man listens to audio tapes he made as a young man, tapes that chronicle the events of his life. Chronicling his life on is a tradition he's honored for all his adult life and he has his life's story stored in boxes in his study. This night Krapp returns to one special tape, the tale of a moment of great purport, a moment when he breaks up with his lover, in a gently rocking boat, on a quiet lake; the last moment he was not alone. He tries to make a new tape, but finds himself at a loss for words, and drifts away on his memories, memories of a mooment of happiness many years before.
Krapp's Last Tape is a gorgeous and provocative play, heartbreaking at times, hilarious at others. Produced by Theatre for a Small Space, with veteran actor Tony Cronin playing Krapp, Krapp's Last Tape is a must see for Beckett afficionadoes!
