The City Theatre Company presents Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean written by
Ed Graczyk October 25 – November 18. The hit play is one of the most funny, emotional and
memorable evenings in the theatre and is the opening production of City Theatre’s 7th Anniversary.
In the dried up, dusty town of McCarthy, Texas, it is more than the weather that is about to break....
Ed Graczyk’s stirring play leaves no stone unturned as he explores the issues of love, loyalty,
friendship and hidden secrets. Set in a small West Texas town dime store where the Disciples of
James Dean reunite for the twentieth reunion in honor of their hero’s death. The ladies'
reminiscences mingle with flashbacks to their youth when Dean filmed Giant years earlier in nearby
Marfa. As the emotions and heat builds, the arrival of a stranger sets off a series of confrontations that
smash their delusions and expose bitter disappointments changing their lives forever.
Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean was first produced on Broadway in 1982 and
a Feature Film was released that same year. Both the stage and screen versions were both directed
by Robert Altman and starred Sandy Dennis, Cher, Karen Black and Kathy Bates. Graczyk only spent
four years in Texas which had a lasting influence and the legend of James Dean and the closures of
five & dime stores lent their influences to the play’s development. He is still writing about the
experience in his newest play Blue Moon Dancing.
Directed by Artistic Director Andy Berkovsky, the cast features Anne Hulsman (Mona), Bobbie Oliver
(Juanita), Samantha Brewer (Sissy), Wendy Zavaleta (Joanne), Renee Brown (Stella Mae), Victoria
Harrison (Edna Louise), Angelina Castillo (Young Mona), Abbey Benold (Young Sissy)
and Gabriel Diehl (Joe).
