Chris Castro is a composer, double bassist, and educator. His music has been described as “on par with Varèse,” giving him the nickname “The New Colossus of Sound.” His most recent project, Canções dos Desassossego (Songs of Disquiet), sets the poetry and prose of Fernando Pessoa. It was awarded a 2021 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant for soprano Sharon Harms and the Los Angeles based Lyris Quartet.
In August of 2022 Chris joined the faculty of the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music at Chapman University, where he is Assistant Professor of Music Composition. In the fall of 2023 Chris joined the faculty of “Upbeat Live,” the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s ongoing preconcert lecture series.
Chris holds degrees in both composition and double bass from the Juilliard School, and a PhD from the University of California, Davis. His musical influences include Johannes Ockeghem, Johann Sebastian Bach, Billie Holiday, Bill Evans, and John Coltrane.
