Angels in America is a two-part play by Tony Kushner. It is a complex and metaphorical examination of AIDS and homosexuality in the 1980s. It follows the stories of two troubled couples, one gay and one straight, as their fates become intertwined.
Kushner was inspired to write the play after a dream he had in 1985 about a friend who died from AIDS. He wrote a poem about the dream, which eventually became Angels In America. The play was originally produced as two stand-alone works, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, which opened on Broadway in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Both productions won Tony Awards for Best Play.
The play explores themes of politics, religion, human connection, illness, identity, and societal change--all still pertinent themes that America is dealing with in this 2024 election year.
