Broadway star Rachel York headlines the roster of September headliners at Sterling's Upstairs in Studio City, CA. Musical theatre star Eric Matthews, and Broadway Star Tam Evans will also appear. Critically acclaimed as LA's premier supper-club, located at the legendary Vitello's Restaurant, Sterling's Upstairs celebrated the beginning of its second year of operation on June 9, 2007, and is known for its dedication to presenting the best of Broadway performers and nightclub artists.
York makes her debut at Sterling's on Sunday, September 9 and Saturday, September 15, 2007. According to press notes, "Ms. York is a dynamic and versatile actress, singer, dancer and comedienne. She is best known for her critically acclaimed Broadway performances in City of Angels, Les Misérables, Victor/Victoria (Drama Desk Award) with Dame Julie Andrews, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Kiss Me, Kate (Helen Hayes Nomination), Sly Fox with Richard Dreyfuss, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels co-starring Jonathan Pryce. She recently completed the national tour of Camelot, earning rave reviews for her portrayal of Guenevere opposite Michael York. Ms. York has starred in Putting It Together (Drama Desk Nomination) also with Julie Andrews, Dessa Rose at the Lincoln Center Theater (Drama Desk Nomination), Anything Goes (Ovation Nomination), Ragtime, Evita, Summer of '42, Summer and Smoke, and Crucifer of Blood with Billy Crudup.
In concert, Ms. York will be headlining the Broadway Showstoppers series with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops September 30-October 7, plus she will be performing at Feinstein's at the Regency in New York City October 14-15. Other recent appearances include The Sound of Music at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of John Mauceri, and concerts with the National Symphony and the Pittsburgh Pops under the direction of conductor Marvin Hamlisch. Her film credits include One Fine Day, Billy Bathgate, Killer Instinct, Second Honeymoon, Au Pair II, and her courageous portrayal of Lucille Ball in the CBS made for television movie, 'Lucy.' Her performances in Kiss Me, Kate (filmed for PBS's Great Performances series) and Victor/Victoria are available on video/DVD. Eric Matthews makes his debut at Sterling's Sunday, September 23, 2007. "The strikingly handsome tenor and native of Los Angeles, has starred in such musicals as No, No Nanette, South Pacific, The Who's Tommy, Anything Goes, Crazy For You, and Singin' in The Rain at Southland theatres. He has also been featured in both Salome and Florencia for the LA Opera. Television credits include a recurring featured role on 'General Hospital,' and guest-starring roles on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Jesse.' Mr. Matthews has also been a lead vocalist for Princess Cruises and Disneyland Resort, and will co-star this summer in Disney's second installment of the phenomenally popular High School Musical at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, CA."
Tam Evans closes out the month at Sterling's on Saturday, September 29, 2007. "Originally from Canada, Ms. Evans starred in the mega-hit musical Mamma Mia! for two years at the Royal Alex Theatre in Toronto which led her to star in the production on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre for another year, as well as two months in the Las Vegas production of the show at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Overall, she starred in 1500 performances! Prior to that time, she spent four years playing lead roles at the world-renowned Stratford Festival of Canada. She starred n the musical Anything That Moves at the World Stage Festival and performed in the world premiere of Seven Lears. She co-starred in Proof and performed in the Brad Fraser ("Queer as Folk") musical Outrageous at CanStage. Additionally, Ms. Evans has co-starred in Rain Dogs written by Lanford Wilson and Tom Waits at The Second City; and in a new jazz opera titled The Wrong Son at The National Arts Center. Other significant theatre credits include Sweet Bird of Youth, House of Blue Leaves, M. Butterfly, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Cherry Orchard, The Winter's Tale, Taming of the Shrew, The Comedy of Errors, and All's Well that Ends Well.
As a voice artist, Ms. Evans has recorded over 30 commercials, played recurring roles on five animated series and is currently playing the role of 'Mystique' on the new animated series "Wolverine" and the "X Men." She has worked on the films The Breakup, Catch and Release, and The Invasion. Evans makes her west coast cabaret debut at Sterling's Upstairs."
