For our 60th Kritzerland show, we are happy to salute the genius and brilliance of composer Andre Previn - the kind of show Kritzerland lives for.
These days, Andre Previn is mostly known as a conductor, as the occasional composer of opera, and he's still active in the jazz world. But once upon a time, Previn was the toast of Hollywood, beginning his career at age seventeen when he joined the music department at MGM. He was nominated for his first Oscar at twenty-one. In addition to his adaptation and scoring of musicals for the screen (Gigi, Bells Are Ringing, My Fair Lady) he was an amazing film composer and gifted melodist and wrote the score for the MGM film musical, It's Always Fair Weather (lyrics by Comden and Green).
He met lyricist Dory Langdon at MGM, they married soon thereafter and gave birth to some amazing songs. Many of his film scores had incredibly catchy title songs - "Goodbye, Charlie," "The Swinger," "Song from Two for the Seesaw (Second Chance)," and, of course, his great title song to the infamous Valley of the Dolls. He had several hits in the 1950s, including his two "Like" songs - "Like Young" and "Like Love," and he not only composed a fantastic score to Inside Daisy Clover, he and Dory Previn wrote its songs, including the classic "You're Gonna Hear from Me."
We'll be doing a lot of those film songs, including a couple from Valley of the Dolls that will blow your mind. But Mr. Previn wasn't only about the movies - he wrote the score to the Broadway musical Coco, which starred Katharine Hepburn (with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner), and the score to the UK musical, The Good Companions (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer).
We have a great cast lined up for this one with several people who are new to Kritzerland - amazing voices all. So, join us for a night of gorgeous melodies, filled with heart, soul, love and laughter - from up-tempo show tunes to bluesy, jazzy ballads, to cool jazz, to classic film title songs.
Kritzerland is produced and hosted by Bruce Kimmel and co-produced by Adryan Russ.
