After receiving a GLAAD Media Award nomination this January for his first play, revolver, playwright Chris Phillips returns to Celebration Theatre with his ambitious follow-up, Garden District, inspired by the works of legendary writer Tennessee Williams.
Pulling back the curtain Williams drew in three of his most famous plays, Garden District explores the previously unseen lives of Allan Grey, Sebastian Venable and Skipper -- all of whom met tragic ends before the events detailed in A Streetcar Named Desire, Suddenly Last Summer and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, setting the plots of those works in motion. "What always fascinated me about these three characters," states Phillips, "is how pivotal their roles were, even though they never got a chance to tell their side of the story. I wanted to simultaneously give them a voice and explore why Williams, due to the time period and his own personal demons, couldn't."
The Cast includes Miles Cooper, Karah Donovan, Aaron Hartzler, Scott Hinson and Daniel Marks.
ABOUT CT TUESDAY
CT Tuesdays is a forum where new works are work shopped for 3-5 Tuesday nights (and sometimes Wednesdays). Scripts produced in this program have already had a staged reading and have been identified to move forward in the development process. A minimalist production using the set and lighting plot of the current Celebration main stage show, the production's focus remains on the script but now actors have rehearsed for a number of weeks and have memorized their lines. After each Tuesday performance, the audience is invited to participate in a 20 minute talk-back with the actors and playwright. The playwright is then encouraged to go over his notes and feedback and make any adjustments before the next performance...or not.
