Charles Durning, Wendy Malick, Michael Urie, and Jessica Chastain star in a staged reading of Dawn O'Leary's A Delicate Arrangement, Monday, September 10, at 8 p.m. at The Hayworth Theater. Directed by Dan Lauria, A Delicate Arrangement, is a production of The Hayworth Theatre's popular Bruno Kirby Celebrity Reading Series.
A Delicate Arrangement revolves around a struggling young actor, "Aldo Calabrese" ("Ugly Betty's" Michael Urie) who is hired by "John Canfield" (Charles Durning -- "One Fine Day," "Spy Hard," "Dog Day Afternoon"), an art specialist, for an unusual job, based on "Aldo's" one qualification: He bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the century's greatest painters, Gabriel Delgado, when Delgado was a young man. It seems that "Canfield" has come to doubt the authenticity of some of the painter's work. Having no avenues of research left, he wants to get information from Delgado's widow, "Helen Gavros" (Wendie Malick -- "Dream On," "Just Shoot Me," "The American President"). But "Helen," who had loved her husband deeply, is a recluse and will talk to no one. "Canfield" hopes she'll be so struck by "Aldo's" appearance that she'll talk to him. The plan works. But it takes on a life of its own, as the wise, strong yet vulnerable "Helen" becomes "Aldo's" mentor - threatening his relationship with his artist girlfriend "Lucy" (Jessica Chastain – "Salomaybe?" Written/directed by Al Pacino), who reacts quite differently to the startling information he acquires for "Canfield."
