Tribute to Sherman Brothers Set for Disney Hall, 6/18

Lawyers and judges, who are more commonly heard in the courtroom, will be on the stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall making music together in perfect harmony while raising funds for those who cannot afford legal services. Founder-Conductor Gary S. Greene, Esq. will lead the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic and its chorus, Legal Voices, dubbed "LA's Only Legal Orchestra & Chorus," in their 7th Annual Concert Extraordinaire on Saturday evening, June 18 at Disney Hall (111 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles 90012). The Sherman Brothers' memorable Disney music and works by composers Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein will highlight the evening, with Legendary Songwriter Richard M. Sherman as a special guest.

This extraordinary evening will feature music by American composers (Bernstein, Copland and Ferde Grofé), with works from Candide, Appalachian Spring, Rodeo and the Grand Canyon Suite. Sherman Brothers' favorites will include Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, along with enchanting music from Tom Sawyer, The Jungle Book, Iron Man II and the Disneyland theme parks. You'll also hear the famed songwriting brothers' well-known Rock n' Roll classics such as "Tall Paul," "You're Sixteen," "Pineapple Princess," "Monkey's Uncle" and "Let's Get Together," with The Honorable Arthur Gilbert (presiding justice of the California Court of Appeal, 2nd District) on keyboard. The grand finale will be a sensational arrangement of "It's A Small World" conducted by Richard M. Sherman. Tony Award-winning star and attorney Michael Maguire, Esq. will be a featured soloist in "Going Home" from Dvo?ák's New World Symphony with the LA Lawyers Phil. Anthony Crivello, a Tony Award-winning Broadway actor who stars as Louis Prima in Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara will sing "I Wanna Be Like You" from The Jungle Book. The Honorable Steven Z. Perren, who is an Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal in the 2nd District, will perform the baritone solo in "River Song" from Tom Sawyer and The Honorable Curtis A. Kin, who is a Judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court, will be a soloist in "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins. Other prestigious lawyers will also be featured performers.

Master of Ceremonies will be KFI radio personality Bill Handel. Jim Raycroft is the choral director.

Tickets range from $20 to $100. Fifty-percent (50%) of the ticket cost is a tax-deductible donation. Twenty-five-percent (25%) of net ticket proceeds will be donated to the Los Angeles County Bar Counsel for Justice and the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation, which both provide legal services to those who cannot afford them. Another 25% will go to the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that performs concerts to raise funds for many charitable causes. ABOUT THE LA LAWYERS PHILHARMONIC & LEGAL VOICES: Proclaimed by the City of Los Angeles as "LA's Only Legal Orchestra," the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic was founded by attorney/conductor Gary S. Greene. The orchestra held its first rehearsal on January 19, 2009 with 30 legal musicians and performed its debut concert on January 30, 2009. Since then, the orchestra has grown to 75 members and performed more than 40 concerts, raising more than tens of thousands of dollars to benefit those who cannot afford legal services and for other charitable purposes.

Greene also founded the orchestra's chorus, Legal Voices, and on April 30, 2011, the group held its first rehearsal. Three months later on July 30, 2011, they debuted with the LA Lawyers Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Consisting of more than 100 voices, Legal Voices gave a triumphant performance of the finale of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, the Ode To Joy. On that date, the County of Los Angeles proclaimed the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic and Legal Voices as "LA's Only Legal Orchestra and Chorus."

In 2012, Greene formed the award-winning Gary Greene, Esq. and His Big Band of Barristers. In the same year, the band participated in the American Bar Association's "Battle of the Lawyer Bands" and was invited to perform in Chicago where they took first place and have been dubbed, "America's #1 Legal Band."

These musical organizations are under the umbrella of the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic where lawyers, judges, law students and legal staff meet in harmony. The members include conservatory graduates, professional musicians as well as hobbyists who are dusting off instruments they played in their youth. Others are harmonizing using their voices that are more commonly heard in the courtroom than on the concert stage. Nevertheless, the music prevails. The orchestra, chorus and big band perform on a professional level for bar associations, civic and charitable events. In fact, the musicals groups have raised funds for a number of charitable organizations including the American Diabetes Association, City of Hope, Ascencia (supporting the homeless), Wounded Warriors Project, the Westwood Transitional Village, the Bessie Pregerson Child Development Center, Inner City Law Center and World AIDS Day.
