After just closing the extended run of its critically acclaimed production of Ligature Marks, Theatre Unleashed is preparing to open another heavy hitter, Rebecca Gilman's chilling Boy Gets Girl, running April 16-May 9, Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Belfry Stage in North Hollywood. The show starts with an innocent blind date that quickly turns into a dangerous obsession. For Theresa, an accomplished journalist, her life is now spiraling chaotically out of control as she experiences a violent terror that's all too familiar.
"This play presents multiple looks at so many different issues, including the honesty with which we act in our daily lives and how those actions are received and perceived," said Director Jacob Smith. "It's creepy. It's real. These characters are so multi-dimensional and identifiable, which sheds an interesting and perhaps even self-reflective light on their actions."
Boy Gets Girl continues TU's 2015 theme of examining the place men and women hold in society and how they relate to each other and the world around them.
"When Jake first introduced me to this script, I made the mistake of reading it before bed and I woke up several times, startled by nightmares," said Artistic Director Jenn Scuderi Crafts. "The idea of being hunted is terrifying. And women today face this terror on so many levels. When just the words on the page evoked such a visceral reaction, I knew Boy Gets Girl was one the stories Theatre Unleashed needed to tell this year."
Along with Boy Gets Girl, Theatre Unleashed will also once again bring back a Late Night Series show called Friends With Penalties, consisting of new selections from the company very own Writer's Lab. TU is also prepping to welcome the second installment of Passages, its collaborative show done with artists outside the company. Plus, the company is excited to bring a brand new show to the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival, an original piece that is sure to create a buzz.
