This has been an exciting summer for Theatre Unleashed.
First the company once again made noise at the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival, earning a "Best in Ensemble Theatre" nomination for its signature show 25 Plays Per Hour and a "Best in Musicals and Operas" nomination for the co-produced festival hit [title of show].
And now, the company is ready to take residence in the NoHo Arts District in the brand new theater, Upstairs at the Crown. Partnering with the renowned Crown City Theatre Co., TU has been designing and building the space to give the company a home, allowing for (among other benefits) more flexibility in programming. To launch the new space at 11031 Camarillo St. in North Hollywood, Theatre Unleashed is extremely proud to present Trust by acclaimed playwright Steven Dietz, running Oct. 3-Nov. 9, Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m.
As the newly-crowned prince of Rock n' Roll, Cody is living a charmed life, which leads his fiancé Becca to seek her own adventure in the strangers around her. Enter Gretchen to design Becca's wedding dress, and perhaps provide something else she's been missing. As their friendship grows, Gretchen reveals the intimate time she shared with former rock icon Leah Barnett, who has somehow found her way into Cody's life. Meanwhile, Public Radio announcer Roy is trying to find that one woman who understands him. His seemingly endless quest eventually leads him to their friend Holly, a young bohemian who would rather spend her nights with famous people new and old. As the song says, "love is all you need," but in a world fueled by passion and beauty, maybe something much more vital and fragile is the key: Trust.
"Dietz is a master of creating dynamic and realistic characters," said Director Scott Marden (who was last seen at the helm of the Hollywood Fringe Festival Favorite It's Important to Leave, As Well). "This play in particular highlights the number of characters that we all play in our daily lives. Whether it's the soft spoken publisher's assistant who isn't saying what she really thinks of the distributor taking her out to dinner; or the former rock star pretending not to care as the new star rises to fame. It makes you wonder how well you really know the people closest to you, or even yourself."
Trust will also be followed by a Late Night show that will feature new original scripts from a group of writers being performed by the same cast of actors week after week (more details later). On Oct. 19, in the Late Night slot, the company will also bring back its 24-Hour Theatre Event with a Halloween-themed show. It's this kind of diversity in programming that led Theatre Unleashed to setting up shop in the new space.
"We've been nomadic for almost the entirety of our existence," said Managing Director Gregory Crafts. "I'm very excited to finally settle down and establish some roots, especially in a wonderful and supportive neighborhood like the NoHo Arts District. I think finally having a home will allow us to make some very big strides both artistically and as an organization."
