Recognizing the increasing consciousness about green sustainability and its effects within the music industry, The Recording Academy® and Waste Management - the "official recycling partner" of The Academy and 53rd GRAMMY Awards® - are partnering to present 'Show Me The Green Light: A Conversation About Greening The Music Industry', a discussion focusing on the incorporation of a reduce, reuse and recycle philosophy and its emerging presence in an ever-changing industrial climate. To be held on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, 10:30 a.m.- noon at the Conga Room at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, the guest panel will feature a diverse array of eco-conscious individuals in their respective fields, including Sony Electronics Director of Mobile Music Mike Kahn; Vans Warped Tour creator/founder Kevin Lyman; Senior Group Manager of The Clorox Company Drew McGowan; House of Marley Entrepreneur and son of Bob Marley Rohan Marley; and Senior Director of Digital Business Support for Universal Music Group Kathleen Strouse. Other featured guests include CEO/Co-Founder of Opportunity Green Karen Solomon and New House LLC Sustainable Strategist Lewis Perkins, with Waste Management's Director of Customer Alliances and Solutions Wanda Williams moderating.

This participatory conversation will specifically discuss the greening experience within the live music spectrum, the digital and physical arenas of distribution and packaging of content, and the growing influence of music mobility and its shared fellowship with this burgeoning enterprise. The amount of electronic products discarded globally has skyrocketed recently, with 20-50 million tons generated every year. Electronic waste (e-waste) now makes up 5 percent of all municipal solid waste worldwide, nearly the same amount as all plastic packaging, but is much more hazardous. Much of this waste is generated from the entertainment and music industries. Today's progressive music labels are creating in-depth programs to address the redesign and management of such materials, thanks to the influence from fans, artists, touring companies and the electronics industry itself.

Waste Management has continued to raise and re-enforce Academy member and consumer awareness throughout the year regarding the importance of responsibly recycling electronics and engaging in consistent recycling behaviors at home, at work and "on the go." This year, WM will begin building awareness around closed-looped recycling initiatives which effectively increase diversion efforts throughout the music industry.
