The Laguna Playhouse will present two stage adaptations of award-winning and highly popular children's stories in February beginning with The Giver (February 17-18, 2012) immediately followed by Hansel & Gretel and Cinderella (February 24 – March 4, 2012).
"The Giver", by Eric Coble from the book by Lois Lowry, is the vastly popular Newbery award-winning book currently read in numerous secondary schools across the country. It's The Playhouse's "Theatre for a New Generation" play selection for teens and educators. "The Giver offers young theatre goers an opportunity to see one of their favorite books brought to life. With stark images and haunting themes, audiences will leave the theatre with discussion material for days" says Donna Inglima, Director.
The Giver is a story about Jonas, a 12 year old member of a utopian-like society where life is prescribed by the Council of Elders and each member of the 'community' is assigned a job. One person alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Jonas is selected to be the next "Receiver of Memory". Once The Giver transmits memories to Jonas, his life is forever altered. This production is suitable for children ages 12 years and up.
Hansel & Gretel and Cinderella offers two enchanting classic fairy tales told a-new. Written by William Glennon this highly artistic set of classics will offer a unique and family-friendly combination of both the Grimm's and the Central European fables.
Hansel and Gretel (Act I) is the story of two children left in the forest by their mother who has been put under a spell. With the help of a Bird and Gnome, the children outwit the wicked witch who has imprisoned them and is fattening up Hansel to eat!
Cinderella (Act II) has a step mother and two step sisters who make her do all the work. When they go off to the Prince's Ball, Cinderella is visited by her Fairy Godmother. Through kindness and a little magic, her Fairy Godmother makes it possible for Cinderella to go to the ball and win the heart of the young Prince.
Featuring a cast comprised of local adult actors and students from The Playhouse's Youth Conservatory program, Director Kelly Herman states "These vibrant stories are full of magic, thrills and plenty of laughter. This is a wonderful opportunity for a cultural family outing."
Both productions offer exclusive 10:00 am student matinee opportunities for schools and educators along with special post-show talkback sessions between the artistic company and audience during public performances.
