This week The Great American Melodrama adds a classic 19th century melodrama to the bill of fare. Directed by Brian Rickel, making his directorial debut, Lost at Sea takes place in London in 1864. Banker Fentress Franklin (Jim Shine) has misappropriated the funds of his largest investor, Walter Coram (Kyle Huey), who is believed to be lost at sea. Franklin's dubious accountant Richard Rawlings (Shelby Nichols) dupes his former employer and recently imprisoned Dr. Joseph Jessop (DJ Canaday) into concocting a scheme that will force Franklin's bank into financial ruin, leaving all of Mr. Coram's wealth to be split between the conniving pair.
Standing squarely in their way are Franklin's daughter Laura (Melody Goodell) and her betrothed, Lord Alfred Colebrooke (Christopher Boyd). While Dr. Jessop changes shape and pretends to be the real Walter Coram, Rawlings works to force Lord Colebrooke out of the country in order to marry Laura Franklin himself, all the while tossing aside his own betrothal to Dr. Jessop's sweet and innocent daughter, Katey Jessop (Ali Keirn). Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Mrs. Jessop (Leah Kolb), daughter Katey and the rescued orphan, Jim Smyly (Nathan Miklas and Chase Kelly) are running the Jessop family apothecary and have taken on a mystery lodger who has the potential to ultimately ruin Rawling's evil scheme, send Jessop back to prison and win the heart of the innocent Katey. Boo, cheer and laugh your way through a great evening of classic melodrama!
Following the play is The Hootenanny Hillbilly Hoedown Vaudeville Revue, directed by George Walker with musical direction by JorDan Richardson. This revue takes you down those country roads to cornfields full of rib-ticklin' jokes, saucy fillies than can show you a move or two and harmonies sweeter than Grandma's pecan pie! It's a country style feast of fun at Old Joe's Place!
