Recognized worldwide for her soul-stirring solo performance of "God is Trying to Tell You Something" in the classic film The Color Purple, actress and vocalist Maria Howell - also known for recent recurring roles on NBC's "Revolution" and Lifetime's "Devious Maids" - is making her Los Angeles singing debut on Sunday, April 26 at 7:00pm at The Colony Theatre at 555 North Third Street in Burbank.
Maria's sultry vocal jazz stylings, which have drawn comparisons to Sarah Vaughn,
Billie Holiday, and
Nancy Wilson, promise to deliver an amazing evening of song that audiences won't want to miss.
"Maria's artistry transcends the stage and takes listeners on a journey beyond time. I've been
a fan for years, and I am thrilled to welcome her to our Colony Cabaret series," says Karan Kendrick, The
Colony Theatre's Director of Development and Cabaret Coordinator.
No stranger to singing on stages across the world, Maria has performed regularly since The Color Purple for the past three decades. A song stylist in her own right, Maria has shared the musical stage with such legendary artists as
Nancy Wilson,
George Benson,
Ray Charles, and
Earl Klugh. After a very successful six year stint performing in Asia, Maria relocated back to the U.S. and performed at Atlanta's Sambuca Jazz Café for nine consecutive years, where she and her pianist
Bill Wilson (son of legendary jazz pianist
Teddy Wilson) became the longest running act in the location's history.
But Maria's vocal talents have yet to find their way to Los Angeles, and she's thrilled to finally bring her musical gifts to her new city. "Many people only know me as an actor," says Howell. "But singing actually came first. I'm very pleased to collaborate with the wonderful staff at The Colony Theatre as a beautiful backdrop to my debut performance in Los Angeles."
Live music fans, cabaret enthusiasts, theatre lovers, and social groups alike won't want to miss this opportunity to see Maria's powerful, riveting, and sultry performance up close and personal. Tickets are $39, $49, and $59 and are available by phone at 818.518.7000 or online at
www.colonytheatre.org.
