James Carey, Producing Artistic Director of The Attic Theatre and Film Center has announced repertoire to be presented as part of the company's 18th Annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One Act Play Festival (formerly known as the One Act Marathon), a contest for playwrights. Performances for this event are supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Performances of this 120 minute evening, comprised of the World Premieres of four Finalist new one act plays, will be given on Fridays and Saturdays, September 11 - October 3, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. at The Attic Theatre and Film Center; 5429 W. Washington Boulevard; Los Angeles, CA 90016.

Jamie Gray, The Attic Theatre and Film Center's Literary Manager and Producer of the One Act Play Festival, said: "This year we received 150 submissions, from locally-based playwrights, as well as other playwrights hailing from around the country, including international entries from Canada, Europe and Israel. A little over 20% of this year's applicants are local. Our company's Literary Committee for the One Act Play Festival has now selected four Finalist plays to be presented in fully staged performances at The ATTIC. Also, this year, for the first time, we have changed the name of the event from a One Act Marathon, to a One Act Play Festival, as now we present four new plays over a four-week span of time, as opposed to presenting 12 plays over a four-day period, as we have in the past. Hence, the event is really now a Festival, as opposed to a Marathon. The goal of the Festival is to discover fresh and exciting new theatre and writers, while providing both a fun event for the audience and simultaneously a serious professional experience for the playwrights."

One Act Plays to be presented as Finalists as part of this year's Festival include: Cross Purposes by Frank Cossa (of Charleston, SC); Bethany/Bakol by Wendy Graf (of Los Angeles, CA); Lessons & Carols by Demetra Kareman (of Brooklyn, NY) and Jon and Mary Go To Pluto by Matthew Tucker (of Los Angeles, CA).

Tickets are $20 for all performances and can be purchased by calling The ATTIC Box Office 24/7 at 323-525-0661, or online at www.attictheatre.org/tickets. All credit cards are accepted. How The One Act Play Festival Works:
The Attic Theatre and Film Center's Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One Act Play Festival (formerly known as the One Act Marathon) is one of the oldest One Act Festivals in the City of Los Angeles, having started in 1990. The Attic Theatre's Literary Committee reads new one act plays submitted from all over the country, after which, the plays are rated according to several guidelines, including: plot, character, theme and quality. Then the top four to six plays are produced in a competition adjudicated by industry professionals from the theatre and film world who focus on the writing elements of each play.

Based on the judges' reviews, the winners are chosen. There is a First Prize of $300 and a Second Prize of $150. In addition, All Finalists Plays selected are offered an opportunity to be featured on The Attic Theatre's online publishing site, where winners from the past few years have a publishing platform to promote their plays and themselves. Monetary awards will be presented to the winners at the Closing Night celebration of the One Act Play Festival on October 3, 2009.

There is also an Interactive Portion to the Contest, giving the audience at any given performance during the Festival's four-week run the opportunity to vote each night for their choices for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Overall Play. At the closing night celebration on October 3, 2009, all the votes for Audience Favorites are tabulated and awards are presented to the actors and director of the winning plays.

About Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer:
Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer was raised in Springfield, IL. She graduated from Webster College outside of St. Louis, MO with a degree in Psychology. She moved to Los Angeles in 1980 and worked as a dancer and actress. She co-founded The ATTIC with James Carey in 1987 when they took over the old ATTIC space on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, CA. Wiesenmeyer served as Executive Producer for all ATTIC shows until she left to return home in 2000 because of health and family reasons. She continued to be active on the Board of Directors until her death in 2007. The Festival was named after her because of her contribution to the theatre group and because of her hard work in establishing and maintaining the One Act Play Festival (formerly known as the One Act Marathon) in its early years. Without her dedication, The Festival and the theatre would have not succeeded.
