Submissions are now open for CAPE's (The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) sixth annual CAPE New Writers Fellowship (CNWF). Entertainment industry professionals select the Fellows through a rigorous process that includes three rounds of blind script judging and an interview. Each writer or writing team will participate in an intensive program and receive a cash stipend and certificate upon successful completion of the program. All entries must be submitted electronically at www.capeusa.org/applyCNWF with all forms and scripts in PDF format. All entries are due electronically by Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 11:59 PM PST.
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship is co-chaired by Steve Tao (VP of Current Programming, The CW) and Leo Chu (Screenwriter, BATMAN NINJA and Creator/Showrunner, SUPAH NINJAS and AFRO SAMURAI). The sessions include master classes and writing labs, in which Fellows revise their scripts under the mentorship of high-level industry professionals.
Fellowship partners for the 2018 CNWF include NBCUniversal, Oriental DreamWorks, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Nielsen Foundation, Carnival Cruises and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, as well as in-kind donations from The Black List and Final Draft. Additionally, one or more Fellows will be selected to participate in Oriental DreamWorks' Artist-In-Residence Program next summer in Shanghai, China. During the program, ODW will share projects they are currently producing and developing, and the writer will have the opportunity to choose to work on one or more of these projects and to collaborate with other artists for one week of creative exploration. Entering its sixth year as a full-fledged Fellowship, this signature program furthers CAPE'smission to champion diversity by educating, connecting, and empowering Asian American & Pacific Islander artists and leaders in entertainment and media.
"CAPE envisions a world where what we watch on our screens reflects the world in which we live. Because diversity starts on the page, writers are the first critical component toward that future," said Michelle K. Sugihara, CAPE Executive Director. "When we have a seat at the table in the writers' room, we can affect what we watch in our living rooms."
Success stories include TV staff writers Marisa Tam (NBC's THE BLACKLIST),
Julie Wong (ABC's GREY'S ANATOMY), Kevin Lau (USA's DAMNATION), Franklin jin Rho (FOX's THE EXORCIST), Ken Cheng (FX and FXX's WILFRED and Amazon's BETAS), Nikhil Jayaram (NBC's SHADES OF BLUE), Helen Shang (CBS's HAWAII FIVE-0) and Thomas Wong (FOX's MINORITY REPORT); executive story editors Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt (CBS's STAR TREK: DISCOVERY); co-producer Aaron Ho (Disney's AUSTIN & ALLY); producer Oanh Ly (The CW's THE MESSENGERS and ABC's THE CATCH); co-executive producer Leonard Chang (FX's SNOWFALL); and screenwriters Isaac Ho (1001 WAYS TO ENJOY THE MISSIONARY POSITION) and Alice Wu (Sony Classics' SAVING FACE).
