On Tuesday, January 27th, 2009, Steven Fales, who made his critically acclaimed Los Angeles theatrical debut with his off-Broadway hit autobiographical one-person play CONFESSIONS OF A MORMON BOY, is back for One Night Only with Mormon American Princess a new cabaret confection to make its Los Angeles debut at L.A.'s renowned Upright Cabaret at Mark's Restaurant, 861 N. La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069.
Steven Fales confesses "God has seen me through excommunication, divorce, prostitution and drugs. Now we're working on narcissism-and it's not going well." Mormon American Princess is an exploration of our self-absorbed society using the multi-talented Fales as a microcosm. But with the help of his new Higher Power (She's fabulous!), he's beginning to see the light as he continues to put Utah on the MAP!
"I learned how to be grandiose from somewhere . . . maybe it had to do with growing up in 'the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth'?" quips Fales. "When everything you know about being human comes from Utah; about being American comes from Las Vegas (where I grew up); and about being gay from the Penthouses of New York, be very afraid."
Says Upright co-producer Chris Isaacson, "As a gay Mormon myself, I am thrilled to team up with Fales to bring his cabaret act to L.A. at a time when Fales' work and message is so timely considering our current fight against Prop 8 and the Mormon Church. I saw Steven Fales in Confessions of a Mormon Boy and was blown away! Also, the fact that his accompanist grew up a Reorganized Latter-day Saint is uncanny. It looks like we Mormons are gonna rock the house to support Equality in California!"
Music Direction by G. Scott Lacy, this ONE NIGHT ONLY cabaret act includes original songs like "The Excommunication Polka,""Cult Rap," "Narcissus", and "You and Utah," as well as such standards as "I Don't Know How To Love Him," "Fifty Percent," "Son of a Preacher Man," "If He Walked Into My Life," "Never Met A Man I Didn't Like," and outrageous medleys and parodies of favorite Broadway show tunes including Steven's popular "Mormon Broadway Medley" and his signature song "Mormon American Princess." MAP recently enjoyed sold-out runs in San Diego, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Joe's Pub in New York.
Steven Fales' acclaimed one-man play Confessions of a Mormon Boy has played over 500 performances in major cities across the country and will open in London this Spring. Directed by Tony Award-winner Jack Hofsiss, the play went on to an Off-Broadway run at the SoHo Playhouse (NY Outer Critics Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance).
Steven will be performing his cabaret act Mormon American Princess in the middle of the run of his new solo play MISSIONARY POSITION at Celebration Theatre in Hollywood, Jan. 9 thru Feb. 8 2009. A classically trained actor, Fales received his M.F.A. in acting from the University of Connecticut. He trained at the Boston Conservatory and received his B.F.A. in musical theatre from Brigham Young University. An excommunicated Mormon, Fales lives in Salt Lake City where he takes an active role in raising his two children.
He is the founder of Mormon Boy Productions, LLC. And The Possibility Foundation which assists sex workers desiring to transition out of the sex industry. For more information on Steven Fales www.mormonboy.com.
