After a long absence Steve Ross, THE CROWN PRINCE OF NY CABARET returns to Los Angeles to perform at L.A.’s renowned Upright Cabaret at Mark’s Restaurant, 861 N. La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069.
In this rare L.A. performance presented by Chris Isaacson and Shane Scheel, Steve Ross returns to the City of Angeles for a ONE NIGHT ONLY concert of melody and humor featuring the music of Porter, Kern, Gershwin and Berlin with tributes to Astaire, Coward and Piaf that is sure to insight fond memories of the Golden era of Broadway and Hollywood’s yesteryears.
Always delivering a stylish, confident and well-executed program, Ross has said "The best songs are stories, and the best singers...storytellers. Great singers can make you care about what they're feeling. You have a sense of knowing them". It is with these sensibilities that Ross masters his interpretations on the keys and seduces the audience with his wit.
Ross has been a fixture of the cabaret community in Manhattan for over forty years. He was born “forty-five minutes from Broadway” in New Rochelle, NY, and was raised in Washington, DC with an opera-loving father and a mother who played on the piano the songs of Gershwin, Porter and Irving Berlin. His first major job in New York was as a successful singer/pianist at the now famous piano bar Ted Hook’s Backstage.
In 1981 he re-opened the legendary Oak Room at Manhattan’s famed Hotel Algonquin where he held forth for three years. He has appeared on Broadway in Noel Coward’s Present Laughter and off-Broadway in his tribute to Fred Astaire entitled I Won’t Dance. Internationally, he has performed in London, Paris, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Melbourne and Sydney as well as cabaret and theatres across America. He’s hosted programs on the BBC and public radio; he continues to write and host lecture/performances on the great Transatlantic Composers’ Songbooks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and on the high seas. Steve is hailed by the New York Times as "…the suavest of all male cabaret performers.”
Created by producing partners Chris Isaacson and Shane Scheel, UPRIGHT CABARET, L.A.’s famed “new generation cabaret” has quickly become the place for cabaret and live performance in Los Angeles. After only three years, the Upright stages in West Hollywood, Palm Springs, Catalina Island and Santa Barbara have been home to performers from over 75 Broadway shows as well as stars from Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, Cold Case, How I Met Your Mother, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, House, Nip/Tuck and countless other film and television productions. At Mark’s Restaurant in West Hollywood, Upright is more than an inventive cabaret, Proprietors Chris Diamond and Chef Wayne Elias along with a welcoming staff dish out charm, class and California cuisine at its finest.
