Satisfy your voyeuristic tendencies about how others look for love. Writer-director Steve Budd presents his award-winning solo show, "What They Said About Love" two weekends in November.
"What They Said About Love" will be coming to Los Angeles fresh from the San Francisco Fringe Festival where it won Best of the Fringe 2016. Steve Budd will be presenting his solo show in conjunction with Theatre Asylum and Combined ArtForm as part of BEYOND ENCORES.
Several years ago, after yet another of his romantic relationships failed to make it to the altar, Steve Budd started interviewing married couples to figure out how they pulled it off. How come, he wondered, they could tie the knot, but he couldn't? He also interviewed similarly stymied singles.
"What They Said About Love" is the love child of over 75 hours of interviews of nearly three-dozen couples and two-dozen singles. Steve Budd presents distillations of the best interviews-the funniest, the strangest, the most provocative, and the most moving. This is documentary theater at its best, a la Anna Deavere Smith. Steve Budd brings 12 characters to life, including five couples and two singles. Meet a New Age couple who met before they met, an artist who can't resist the homes guys in her West Oakland 'hood, and a pair of Metal Heads who thought it would be a hoot to get married on 6-6-6.
"What They Said About Love" is directed by David Ford, with additional directorial assistance from Slater Penney. It garnered rave reviews at the San Francisco Fringe Festival from critics and audiences alike. Richard Connema, critic for TalkinBroadway.com, said, "What They Said About Love was funny, poignant, thoughtful, and revealing about the search for love. It was an amazing performance."
"What They Said About Love" is part of BEYOND ENCORES series featuring the best shows and performers from the best of the San Francisco and San Diego Fringe Festivals. BEYOND ENCORES is being produced by Theatre Asylum/Combined Artform and Studio C Artists www.combinedartform.com; www.theencoreawards.com.
