Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's in Studio City, CA is pleased to announce its May, 2008 roster of headliners including From Broadway to All That Jazz and Jantre Haskin - winner of Sterling's LA's Next Great Stage Star 2007-08. Critically acclaimed as LA's premier supper-club located at the legendary Vitello's Restaurant, Sterling's Upstairs is known for its dedication to presenting the best of Broadway performers and Nightclub artists on a weekly basis.
SATURDAY, MAY 10 AND SUNDAY, MAY 11 - FROM BROADWAY TO ALL THAT JAZZ is an original revue that was last presented at Steinway Hall in Atlanta, GA. Featuring TED HOWE and the TED HOWE TRIO (Paul Kreibich/Drums and Percussion; and Tom Warrington/Bass), Broadway and Musical Theatre Star
Cynthia LeeTCH offers brief but amusing commentary on the material, while Howe recalls how each song made its way from the Broadway stage to the world of jazz; nightclubs, big bands, recordings, concert halls, and movies and television. The production is highlighted by The Ted Howe Trio performing exciting, original, contemporary instrumental arrangements of the songs with Recording Artist and Musical Theatre Star DEBORAH SHULMAN joining in on select numbers to add her own vocal interpretations to the music and lyrics. The one hour revue showcases classic songs from Broadway shows of the 1930's such as I Got Rhythm, Love For Sale, I Get a Kick Out of You, I Loves Ya Porgy, Summertime, Where or When and This Can't Be Love.
Ted Howe's natural persistence and relentless fascination of developing his craft dominated his life from the time that he was a student at the Berklee College of Music to becoming a Professor there by age 24, teaching piano arranging, theory and improvisation. Since, Mr. Howe (a Summit Records Recording artist) has performed with such orchestras as the Atlanta and Dallas Symphonies and with such stars as
Joe Williams, Mel Torme,
Steve Allen,
Henry Mancini, and
Lainie Kazan - to name a few.
Deborah Shulman played clubs for years in London, Sydney, Manila, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and often opened for such stars
Johnny Ray,
Robert Goulet and
Carol Lawrence. Today, she is not only a recording artist who has also co-starred and toured in the national Broadway companies of Cats and All Night Strut, but her reputation as a skilled vocal teacher has attracted a clientele that has grown to include
Bette Midler,
Linda Ronstadt,
Jennifer Warnes and
David Lee Roth.
