Southland Company Closes Inaugural Season with Pertinent Production of William Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT Image

The southland company closes their 2017 inaugural season with William Shakespeare's As You Like It this December, a visiting production at The Fountain Theatre in Hollywood. Directed by founding company member, Israel López Reyes, this pertinent production will feature live music by Marshall McDaniel, original compositions by Lea Madda, and the southland company ensemble members.

"This is a story about finding refuge; about securing your existence through humor, through labor, and through love. We need that today more than ever. As a director, I've always been attracted to classical work; particularly Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Lope De Vega. I feel that the literary spectacle within these stories and the humanity expressed in their language has yet to be matched," says López Reyes.

Set within a deceptive court and a pastoral landscape, As You Like It follows a young woman named Rosalind who after becoming displaced and losing her home must reach out and build her own refuge amongst strangers. The sins of class, the freedom of nature, and questions on how we choose to articulate the mystery of our existence converge in this timely journey.

"Shakespeare's As You Like It became a perfect fit for our fall programming because the story centers on a young woman making her own choices and navigating her own journey," says López Reyes. "Three-fourths of this company is run by women and our responsibility this year was to focus on young women; telling their story, staging their experience and inviting youth women organizations to see themselves onstage."
