The 2010/11 World Music series at Walt Disney Concert Hall continues on Monday, April 4, at 8:00 pm with the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma. Recently nominated for a 2011 Grammy for Best Classical Crossover Album for Off the Map, the Silk Road Ensemble will present a wide range of music, new and traditional, from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The program includes a new work from Berkeley-native composer Gabriela Lena Frank, written for the Silk Road Ensemble. Frank's multi-movement piece ¡Chayraq!: Rough Guide to a Modern Day Tawantinsuyu alludes to the music of indigenous festivals, religious ceremonies and harvest fiestas of Latin America.

Another program highlight is Osvaldo Golijov's Air to Air, a soundscape of Christian-Arab and Muslim-Arab melodies, indigenous Mexican voices in prayer, and 18th-century Sardinian protest song.

In addition, the Silk Road Ensemble performers have contributed several pieces celebrating the joy of community, such as gaita player Cristina Pato's new arrangement of two popular muiñeiras, the fast-paced traditional dances of Galicia.

The Silk Road Project is a nonprofit arts and educational organization that connects musicians, composers, artists, and audiences from Asia to Europe to the Americas. Founded in 1998 by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who serves as its artistic director, and led by Laura Freid, chief executive officer and executive director, the Silk Road Project presents performances by the Silk Road Ensemble, engages in cross-cultural exchanges and residencies, leads workshops for students, and partners with leading cultural institutions to create educational materials and programs. Developing new music is a central undertaking of the Project, which has been involved in commissioning and performing more than 60 new musical and multimedia works from composers and arrangers around the world.
