Santa Ana Sites is pleased to present one of the most exciting world music ensembles, Banda Magda, on Saturday, March 2 at 8 pm at the Copper Door in Santa Ana. The band will be presented as a culminating event of Santa Ana's annual Boca de Oro Festival of Literary Arts & Culture. Tickets are available for $12 - 22 and are on sale now at www.SantaAnaSites.com. Further information on Boca de Oro Festival of Literary Arts & Culture can be found at www.BocadeOro.org.
Like a distant shoreline, New York's Banda Magda blurs distinctions and suggests wonders. Even if you don't speak any of the six languages they sing in, you are still transported into beautiful images with tales of love and devotion, as strong as the bonds between the band's diverse musicians. Hailing from Greece, Japan, Argentina, USA, Colombia, Brazil, Turkey, Israel and UK, members of Banda Magda are a melting pot of worldly talent.
Led by firecracker performer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda is a bright vibrating community with bold strokes. Giannikou attended Berklee College of Music, where she trained in film scoring, arranging and music production. In addition to three Banda Magda albums, the Greek-born artist has collaborated with the Kronos Quartet for a performance at Lincoln Center and Snarky Puppy, participating in their Grammy Award-winning Family Dinner Vol. 1.
Founded in 2011, Banda Magda presents an array of musical styles, from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band's global background and unchained musicality.
This group of close musical friends transform Giannikou's songs into engaging romps that have earned them a spot with Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers Series, along with performances at Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, The Kennedy Center, The Jefferson Center, Celebrate Brooklyn, Jazz al Parque, St. Mortiz Festival Da Jazz, Chicago World Music Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival and World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD).
In addition to performing around the world, Banda Magda is dedicated to the education of young musicians. In an effort to expand touchpoints of Santa Ana Sites within the community, Banda Magda will be holding master classes of improvisation and jazz at Santa Ana Unified School Districts on Monday, March 4. Banda Magda's goal is to encourage open-mindedness and self-exploration through the study of global music cultures.
The third annual Boca de Oro or "Mouth of Gold" Festival will be held in the Downtown Santa Ana Arts District on Saturday, March 2. Featuring a beautiful range of diverse and evocative artists, the festival will present authentic self-expression in its rawest form. Attendees will experience an eclectic menu of literary readings, poetry, spoken word, live music and visual art. Further information on Boca de Oro Festival of Literary Arts & Culture can be found at www.BocadeOro.org.
This presentation celebrates the continuation of Santa Ana Sites performances. Additional information regarding the 2019 spring season can be found at SantaAnaSites.com.
